Below are two different maps to show how it varies by regions of the United States. And if you don't live in the United States, what do you call it and does it change regionally in your country?

Fun Friday: What's It Called?
I've posted about this a couple of times in the past, but I have new readers, so I'm going to post this again. Please sound off even if you did last time.
That carbonated beverage that comes from a can--what generic name do you call it by? It varies by region. I grew up in northern Indiana calling it "pop." I move to Jacksonville, FL and it was all "cokes." It was frustrating to ask for a Coke and have someone say, "What kind of coke?" Now I call it "soda." What do you call it?

Learned to call is pop but grew up calling it soda, and I am nowhere on your map!
ReplyDeleteIt's "soda" here (Las Vegas Nevada). The map is probably accurate for Clark County (the southern-most part of Nevada) at 50%-80%. Enough of the population comes here from other areas that it's probably correct to not be at 80%-100%.
ReplyDeleteIn australia we say cool drink. Or just say what the can is ie coke, pepsi
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing that.
ReplyDeleteIn WNY we call it Pop
ReplyDeleteIn Germany we use the English word "soft drink" for it
ReplyDeleteInteresting to see the differences!
ReplyDeleteI think in England they called it Fizzy drinks when we were there, but we called it by name --Lilt, coke ...
